Customers of the two networks, which merged last year, will see an increase of up to 11.7% on their monthly rate. This is calculated based on the retail price index (RPI) rate of inflation (7.8%) plus 3.9%.
When will the new prices come into force?
Prices are due to go up from 1st April, and the extra amount will be determined by the following factors:
- The network you’re with
- The type of contract you have
- When your contract started
O2 price increase – what to expect
- For customers who joined O2 before 25th March 2021, the increase will be capped at the rate of RPI inflation (7.8%)
- For customers who joined O2 after 25th March 2021, the increase will be 11.7%
- For customers on an O2 Refresh tariff (where device and airtime bills are separate), the increase only applies to the airtime part of the plan
- Customers can’t cancel their plan as a result of the price increase, as this would have been outlined to them at point of sale
Virgin price increase – what to expect
- Every Virgin Mobile customer will see their bill rise by the full 11.7%, regardless of when they signed up
- The increase only applies to airtime tariffs. Device plans will remain unaffected
- Customers received warning of the price hike back in January. Because the increase is a change to their terms and conditions, they have the right to leave without penalty
