When the signs can detect mobile technology being used a symbol will be flashed, which will hopefully prompt the driver to put their phone away.

Three signs will be installed around Norwich costing around £4,500 each and can detect the difference between a mobile phone and Bluetooth signal, so drivers using hands-free won’t be included. Recent study results showed that 26% of overall drivers in the UK use their phones while driving to make calls, check social media and send texts. Although many people are welcoming the new smart technology, some are hesitant, as the technology cannot differentiate between drivers or passengers using their mobile.

Benefits of the new phone detection technology

Avoids accidents

In 2016, 780 were injured in accidents directly correlated to using their mobile while driving. These injuries and even fatalities can be avoided if drivers simply don’t use their phones while in transit, or use hands-free technology so attention is paid to the road.  In March 2017, new fines and penalties were introduced that could cost up to £2,500 for bus drivers and heavy goods vehicles.

It’s a popular ban

According to a survey conducted by British Social Attitudes (BSAS), it found that 70% of the public ‘disagreed strongly’ with the idea that using mobile phones whilst driving is safe. This is a 56% rise since 2007, which shows that more people are aware of the dangers of not paying attention to the road.
